Mendip Hooked Tag

from 15.00

The original of this hooked tag was found in Somerset, UK, by a metal detector in Feruary of 2012. It has since been dated between the 7th and 10th centuries. We offer reproductions in either brass or german silver (a nickel alloy), so please choose which metal you would prefer.

Hooked tags were common in many early period societies. They are found in various location on the body in excavated graves. One of the commonest usages was to secure the winningas (leg wraps); the hook acted like the fastener of a modern elastic bandage. Sewn onto one end of the woolen strip, it would hook into the wrapping and keep it from coming undone.
