York Hooked Tag

from 15.00

The original of this hooked tag was excavated in York, dating between the 9th - 10th centuries. It's an Anglo-Saxon design found in a Viking context. We offer this design in either brass or german silver (a nickel alloy), so please choose which metal you prefer.

Hooked tags were common in many early period societies. They are found in various location on the body in excavated graves. One of the commonest usages was to secure the winningas (leg wraps); the hook acted like the fastener of a modern elastic bandage. Sewn onto one end of the woolen strip, it would hook into the wrapping and keep it from coming undone.
