Gatebo Viking Cross
The original of this cross dates from the late 10th to early 12th century, and is from Gatebo, Oland, Sweden. It was made as a reliquary, able to open, with space for some sort of relic. The cross was made of silver with a niello inlay and a loop for hanging. Notice that Christ is depicted as being tied to the cross, a feature found in several other Scandinavian crucifixes.
Our version is etched in German silver (a nickel brass alloy) and comes with neither relics nor space to put them in. It measures approximately 2 inches wide (5 cm) by 2 1/2 (6.3 cm) inches tall. Detail is highlighted with black epoxy. Loops may vary as they are hand made.
